Dealing With Critics

pay-no-attention-to-the-man-behind-the-curtainThe real motives come from deep within a person—as from deep waters—but a discerning person is able to draw them up and expose them. —Proverbs 20:12

The Opinions of Critics are the opium by which they intoxicate themselves into a stupor. In a quest to impress themselves, critics demean or belittle others to cover-up the fallacy of their grandeur. In other words, they “get-high” off of their own critical words, so that they don’t have to face the reality that they really feel like a worm.

It’s like the “Great Wizard of Oz”. There was a lot of fire and smoke, but behind the curtain was a cowering little person afraid of the world. A critic like the “Great Wizard” may say, “Pay no attention to the person behind the curtain”, but a leader will pull back the curtain to expose the real person, yet will still lovingly influence their weaknesses without prejudice. Leaders expose the heart but they don’t disclose or exploit its contents through criticizing or gossip.

Think about this: “Critics criticize because they don’t, but desperately wish they had your life”. Within every hardened heart, there’s a “soft-spot” that your influence can touch and reach. Your daily example of leadership will continue chipping away at their hardened-rock-heart and eventually—it will give-in.
